LL Ori bow shock (24 KB)

LL Ori, a very young star in the Orion nebula, sports a strong solar wind which is fending off the outflowing gas of the Orion Nebula. The centre of the nebula is located slightly to the right of this image. A prominent bow shock of material is flowing around the star, indicating just how much of an influence solar winds can have on their parent star's immediate environment. Several other young stars in this region exhibit similar bow shocks.

The Great Nebula in Orion is a reasonably close neighbour of ours, at a distance of only 1,500 light years.
