Mars: topographic relief map centred on the region Tharsis Montes (or the Tharsis Bulge, as it's
sometimes known) and Valles Marineris. The image was constructed using data from the Mars Orbiter Laser Altimeter (MOLA)
instrument aboard Mars Global Surveyor (MGS). Relief is accurate to less than 5 metres.
Red and brown areas are high, and blue areas are low. The white spots are extinct volcanoes on Tharsis. Although the
base of Olympus Mons is lower (topographically) than the other Tharsis
volcanoes, it peaks well above any of the others at 27 Km above the Martian datum line (equivalent to Earth's Sea
Level).
